Since the first week in June I’ve been steadily ploughing on with my marathon training.
I’ve been following the Pfitzinger and Douglas up to 55 miles per week 18 week schedule.
The first week was a mixture of an 8 mile lactate threshold run on Tuesday, a 9 mile aerobic run Thursday, a 4 mile recovery run on Saturday and a medium – long run of 12 miles on Sunday. This ended up being an accumulated mileage of 33 miles.
The second week was general aerobic and speed work of 8 miles with 10 x 100 metre strides on the Tuesday. On Thursday it was a general aerobic run of 10 miles. Saturday was a 5 mile recovery run followed by a Marathon pace run on Sunday of 13 miles with 8 miles at marathon race pace. 36 miles was the total distance for this week.
The third week consisted of a general aerobic 10 mile run on the Tuesday followed by a 4 mile recovery on the Wednesday and a lactate threshold 8 miler on Thursday. Saturday was a 4 mile recovery followed by a medium – long run of 14 miles on the Sunday. This week was a combined mileage of 40 miles.
Week four was a general aerobic and speed run of 8 mile with 10 x 100 metre strides on the Tuesday followed by a recovery 5 miler on the Wednesday. Thursday saw a general aerobic 10 miler. Saturday was a recovery 4 miler followed by a 15 mile medium – long run on the Sunday. This week saw me complete 42 miles.
On week five Tuesday was a lactate threshold 9 miler with 5 mile at half marathon pace followed by a recovery 5 miler on the Wednesday while Thursday was a general aerobic 10 miler. Saturday saw a recovery 5 miler followed by a marathon pace run of 16 miles with 10 mile being at marathon race pace. This was an accumulated week of 45 miles.
Finally week six was my recovery week which saw me complete a general aerobic plus speed 8 miler with 10 x 100 metre strides on the Tuesday and a recovery 5 miler on the Wednesday. Thursday was a general aerobic 8 miler while Saturday was a recovery run of 4 mile. Tomorrow (Sunday) will see me do a medium to long run of 12 miles. This will be a combined total of 37 miles for this week.
Tomorrow will see me complete my first Mesocycle of Endurance. Weeks seven to eleven will be the second Mesocycle which is Lactate Threshold + Endurance.
Overall things have been going well. A few niggles here and there but that was bound to happen. This training plan is a lot more intense than last years plan but should put me in the best possible condition come race day.
In just six weeks I’ve ran 233 miles in extremely hot conditions. Phew…no wonder I’m falling asleep everywhere.
As an aside, I’ve finally gotten around to buying myself a head torch for the Thunder Run in two weeks. On first try I couldn’t help but get my Terminator on…”I want your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle.”
Happy running everyone. Stay safe, keep hydrated and as Baz Luhrmann says ‘Wear Sunscreen’.
Dream, Believe, Train, Achieve.
